Native App vs. Browser Tab vs. Basic Viewer
Frigate's own web UI is built for a desktop browser, not a phone. On mobile it's a pinch-to-zoom dashboard living in a Safari tab: no push notifications when something happens, no Home Screen widget to check a camera at a glance, and every re-open means finding the tab again or typing your server address in. It works, but it wasn't designed to be pulled out of your pocket ten times a day.
Basic Frigate viewers on the App Store close that gap partway — usually a clean iPhone app for live feeds and not much else. That's a fine trade if all you want is a lightweight window onto your cameras. Lumen is built for people who want their NVR to feel like a first-party Apple app: Live Activities on the Lock Screen while an event is recording, Apple Watch complications for an at-a-glance camera status, a native Mac app instead of a browser bookmark, and an Apple TV app for the living room — not just a screen mirror. Widgets sit on your Home Screen and show the last event without opening anything.
None of that requires a cloud relay or a subscription to get started. Lumen talks to your Frigate instance directly, the same way the web UI does, and keeps the parts of self-hosting that matter — your footage never leaves your network unless you choose to make it reachable remotely.
